Does self-disclosure lessen my perceived capability as a competent physician and academic? Should it?

TLDR; There’s power in an acknowledgment of the commonality of psychiatric pathologies, through a valuable anchor such as a provider’s lived experience. Putting a face to conditions that are heavily stigmatized may allow a patient to have a concrete example of a life after a diagnosis. This is especially important because of socioeconomic and social factors that influence if an individual will even seek psychiatric health services!
